Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is the world’s original and best New Year celebration. There is live music, DJs, countdown firework displays and the all-important midnight moment at Edinburgh Castle. It is an all-standing outdoor event.
Why Hogmanay – Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party is one of the world’s greatest New Year celebrations. It appears as one of the ‘Top 100 things to do before you die’ and Top 25 World Travel Experiences’.
Best spot to enjoy Hogmanay – Top of The Mound. Hot Dub Time Machine takes over the city centre! The time travelling dance party make the the BIGGEST. HOT DUB. EVER!! Get there at 8:45 PM.
Best spot to view the fireworks – Frederick Street is the best spot to view the midnight fireworks but make sure you get a good spot before 8:30 PM if you want good pictures.
The fireworks were one of my favourite parts of the Hogmanay celebrations but the London Eye fireworks are out of the world! THE BEST!
What to wear – Make sure whatever you’re wearing is comfy and ready to take on all kinds of weather. Layered clothing is always a good strategy – it means you can add / remove layers depending on how comfortable you feel!
If you have time, attend the full 3 day programme –
- The Torchlight Procession
- Hogmanay Street party and concert in Princes Street Gardens
- Loony Dook
The three days of celebrations are surely a testament to the fact Scots simply love a party, and nobody else does it quite as well as we do!
#1 Buy your street party tickets and other Hogmanay activity tickets as early as possible from the Hogmanay website (http://www.edinburghshogmanay.com/) which begins ticket sales at the beginning of October.
Cheeky Tip – If you arrive at princess street before 6:30 pm, you don’t really need a ticket. Non ticket holders at princess street were not removed. But I would still recommend buying the ticket, it would be heart breaking to get kicked out on the new years eve.
#2 Book your hotel as early as possible and stay in the Old Town
#3 ARRIVE TO THE STREET PARTY BEFORE 11PM, OR THE OFFICIALS WILL NOT LET YOU IN! ARRIVE BEFORE 9PM TO GET A DECENT PLACE TO STAND.
#4 Get your own alcohol in plastic bottles and cans.
#5 Download the full lyrics to the Auld Lang Syne and bring them with you, and you will sing like a pro at midnight.
“Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne!”
#6 There is not really room to ‘walk around’, you just shuffle through the crowds. Get a good spot where you are not pushed
The whole experience was one to remember. From dancing in the streets to a party with a pint in the gardens, Edinburgh truly knows how to party on Hogmanay. If you’ve never experienced the city on Hogmanay I can assure you, you will never forget it.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay shows the world how to party!
